From August 3 to August 18, the School of Economics successfully held the 2020 “Modern Economics” Summer School, namely, Graduate Summer School and Summer School for Teachers at Colleges. The programs are jointly organized by Shanghai Municipal Commission on Degrees and SUFE. This year’s programs, offered online, enrolled 134 students (including 23 auditors) and 83 teachers from famous universities across the country. Despite the physical distance, teachers and students actively participated and interacted with experts in fulfillment of the aim to build knowledge and improve research skills.

In the morning of August 3, an online opening ceremony was held. Yongkang Xie, Associate Dean of Graduate School, Dean Yahong Zhou, Associate Dean Jinxiong Chang and Yan Sun, and Assistant to the Dean Yongchao Zhang attended the ceremony. Peihua Mao, Assistant to the Dean, hosted the ceremony.

Yongkai Xie, Associate Dean of Graduate School, extended a warm welcome to the participants and encouraged them to forge ahead in learning and research. He pointed out that Summer School Programs enabled participants to learn knowledge and expertise of modern economics, thereby improving their ability to do research and making progress towards better personal development. He hoped that the programs would be useful to the participants, who could later play a demonstrating and leading role in their colleges.

Dean Zhou warmly welcomed the teachers and students. Through video conferencing, he shared with the participants the history and innovations and achievements of SOE, from internationalization of higher education, international recruitment of faculty, to paper publications in international journals. He also elaborated on the practice-oriented and innovation-oriented development strategy of SOE that aimed to build first-class disciplines. He put the programs in the context of six education reform measures taken by SOE, namely, building a first-class faculty, strengthening academic research, carrying out education reforms on all fronts, paying close attention to learners’ attitude and teacher’s professional ethics, strictly following faculty assessment standards and standardizing administrative procedures, and introduced the milestones in SOE’s education and research reforms. He said that Summer School Programs aimed to open up the achievements of SOE in faculty internationalization and curriculum system reform and benefit young scholars and graduate students around the country. The program is a learning platform for young scholars who conduct academic research on economic issues and teach economics in colleges; for graduate students in colleges and other research institutions, it is an opportunity for them to learn and grow.

The two-week study courses in the programs included advanced microeconomics, advanced macroeconomics and advanced econometrics. The courses were offered through virtual classes taught live by SOE’s outstanding faculty members and assigned teaching assistants to answer questions and assist participants with their work.  In addition, eight eminent scholars from home and abroad were invited to give keynote lectures, so as to guide participants to apply theoretical knowledge for effective research and to broaden their academic horizons.

Since its creation, “Modern Economics” summer school has been well received by young teachers and graduates at colleges and produced good social impact. Through ongoing efforts, it has achieved “normalization, routinization and branding”, made a strong contribution to exchange and cooperation among teachers and students, improved education quality for graduates in economics and served as a learning and exchange platform for young scholars who conduct academic research and teach economics.
